Why do DPFs block?
- DPF filters are designed to capture particular matter (soot) and burn it off during the Regeneration process. The byproduct of this is ASH, ash isnt so easily removed and restricts airflow. DPF filters have a lifespan and when ash content reaches a pre-determined level by the manufacturer the filter is said to have reached its end of life. With this clean, in most cases the ash and soot can be cleaned giving the filter a renewed chance of life and save £000s.
Will an in-situ chemical clean fix my DPF?
- The simple answer is, we don't know. Every DPF is different. This clean removes almost all PM - but ASH can harden, especially where oil has contaminated it. In which case on off-vehicle clean may be more suitable. But even off-vehicle services isn't guaranteed to remove ash.
- Having done loads of these, in-situ chemical clean seems to have about an 80% success rate overall. If the DPF just has a PM build-up (usually caused by poor driving habits) then success rate stands about 90%. As ASH has built up success rate stands about 70% success rate.
If you DPF is blocked to the extend the vehicle doesn't run, then sadly this service is not suitable for your vehicle.
What will I do to your filter?
- A quick scan will take place to establish current differential pressure within the DPF and the PM level currently.
- Stage 1 chemical is pumped in to the DPF via a pressure sensor (or other appropriate sensor hole) using a specialist tool designed to pump up to 4bar of pressure. This will be left to soak to soften up the ash content, mix with any oil contamination, break down particulate matter. Minimum 20 minute soak, usually much longer where vehicle is left with me. Sometimes over night for severe blockages.
- A forced regeneration will be done to burn off and flush out toxins.
- A Stage 2 chemical will be pumped in to the DPF to remove any remaining toxins. But also coat the honeycomb material with a protective film to help prevent future buildup.
- A short further regen will be done.
